Following on from the filming of the current BBC thriller series The Night Manager, One Great George Street was once again chosen as a filming location for War Machine, a satire of America’s war with Afghanistan. An upcoming American comedy war film directed and written by David Michôd, War Machine is based on the non-fiction book The Operators by Michael Hastings, and features Brad Pitt.
Location Manager Tony Hood shares his experience of working with One Great George Street’s Special Events Team, and sheds some light on why the venue is proving so popular as a filming location…
It can be difficult to secure the dates you need in such a popular venue as One Great George Street (OGGS) but it is always well worth the effort. We used OGGS as a hotel reception for War Machine. There are a number of stunning rooms within the building but what really sets the venue apart is the helpful nature of the event staff who have everything covered. It is unusual in Central London to find a single location that has such an extensive range of film-worthy spaces, and additionally the room to house the various elements of the production to allow us to shoot out the scenes quickly and efficiently.
In a very short space of time we were able to build a hotel reception, load in props, manage all elements of background costume and makeup, have enough green rooms to look after all our principal cast and cater for the whole cast and crew on site.
I would go back every film!

The special events team at One Great George Street were delighted our venue was chosen as a filming location for the BBC’s adaptation of John le Carré’s thriller, The Night Manager
As a Grade II listed historic building located in Westminster, our conveniently-located and diverse spaces – from magical, old-world libraries to the jaw-dropping Great Hall – are ideal for lavish, period TV series or films. Location Manager Tom Howard was a pleasure to work with, and while it was a busy period for the venue either side of the filming, we worked together to ensure a stress-free environment for the cast and crew. A highlight was seeing Olivia Colman in action in our Great Hall and the resultant exposure within Episode 1 & Episode 2 currently on BBC Iplayer. Don’t miss Episode 3 this Sunday 6th March!
